St. Louis Rams to Honor Deacon Jones

The St. Louis Rams will retire the jersey of Deacon Jones before the home opener against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. The pre-game ceremony will begin at 11:40 forcing fans to get into the dome and to their seats early. Deacon Jones played for the Los Angeles Rams from 1961 to 1971 and is considered one of the best defensive players in NFL history. Jones won NFL defensive player of the year twice, and he was voted to the Pro Bowl nine times. Deacon known for creating the term "quarterback sack" is credited with 173 sacks, even though the NFL did not make "sacks" an official statistic until 1982. Deacon Jones received the highest honor when Elected to the NFL Hall of Fame in 1980. Deacon Jones along with Merlin Olsen, Lamar Lundy and Rosey Grier made up the "Fearsome Foursome." one of the best defensive lines in NFL history.

I was very disappointed in the ceremonies of Marshall Faulk and Georgia Frontiere that the Rams put on. I am not sure why they would have the ceremony for Deacon Jones prior to home opener. There will be lots of fans still outside who will miss this I am sure. Why can't they have the ceremony at half time? I hope it is very nice and we are able to hear it. Deacon deserves this one to be special. It will be great to see the #75 hanging in the rafters where it belongs!
