Steven Jackson Selected To Pro Bowl

Steven Jackson was selected to the Pro Bowl on Tuesday. The NFC will have three running backs with Adrian Peterson and Michael Turner joining Jackson for the game which will be played January 30th in Honolulu. This is Jackson's third time being selected to play in the Pro Bowl.

Steven Jackson has 1196 rushing yards on 319 carries and 6 touchdowns so far this season. In addition Steven is the Rams 3rd leading receiver with 42 receptions for 344 yards. Jackson's 1540 total yards ranks him 2nd in the NFC heading into week 17.

Not to take anything away from Jackson who is the ultimate warrior and heart of the St. Louis Rams his numbers are not outstanding. At 3.7 yards per carry Jackson is behind most other backs in the NFC. Jackson however faces a ton of 8 man fronts and has battled injuries and rang the bell week in and week out to help his team.

No other Rams player will join Jackson in Honolulu. Other than James Laurinaitis who has 105 tackles or James Hall who has 10.5 sacks, nobody really has the stats to justify a position in this game in 2010.

St. Louis Rams Hold On Beat 49ers 25-17

The St. Louis Rams gave Rams fans everywhere an extra Christmas present when they held on to beat the San Francisco 49ers 25-17 in front of a loud crowd of 52,820 at the Edward Jones Dome on Sunday. With the win the St. Louis Rams remain in first place of the NFC West with a record of 7-8. The Rams are still forced to beat the Seattle Seahawks (6-10) next week to capture the NFC West crown. The Rams have nothing to apologize for if they make the playoffs at 8-8. After only seeing six victories over the last three years I know I do not care how they get in, just win baby!

The young St. Louis Rams still lack the killer instinct of the greatest show on turf days but Sunday they were scrappy and showed a will to win, and that was all they needed a win. The Rams came out dominating the game in the first quarter of play. The Rams opened the game with a 60 yard drive capped off by a Steven Jackson one yard plunge. The key to the drive was the aggressive play calling of Pat Shurmer. Often criticized you have to give him props for this drive. The Rams were in 4-wide most of the drive and the key play was a pass interference on a deep ball to Denario Alexander. The Rams who are reluctant to play Alexander a lot starter the game with him playing. This was a huge play and gave the Rams the early momentum.

The St. Louis Rams defense came out flying and shutdown the 49ers completely in the first quarter. In the first quarter alone the Rams defense forced two fumbles and caused a safety to put the Rams up 9-0. The 49ers were unable to move the ball and had only one first down during the quarter. For the game the Rams defense had four sacks, a safety, and two takeaways, while causing 5 fumbles. The 49ers managed 331 total yards but well over 100 of those came in the 4th quarter with the 49ers trailing.

Everything changed late in the first quarter with the Rams up 9-0. After the safety and a nice kick return by Danny Amendola, who had an outstanding game the Rams were in position to build on their lead. Sam Bradford hit a streaking Brandon Gibson to put the Rams on the 49ers 10 yard line. The Rams were in position to go up by 12 or 16 and really put their foot on the throat of the 49ers. Then came a play the Rams always seem to have, the big mistake at a bad time. Sam Bradford dropped back to pass on first down and Patrick Willis came streaking through the line and chased Bradford out of the pocket. Sam should have taken the sack or quickly thrown the ball out of bounds but he did not. Willis forced the fumble and the 49ers took over.

The St. Louis Rams defense continued to dominate and held the 49ers to two first downs in the 2nd quarter. The shocking part of this was that 49ers found themselves up 14-12 at half time! That's right after doing nothing the entire half the 49ers had the lead on two big plays. Ted Ginn Jr. returned a Donnie Jones punt 78 yards to make it 9-7. Then on the very next drive Troy Smith threw a pass through the hands of Vernon Davis that went right to Michael Crabtree who scored from 60 yards out and the 49ers were up 14-12.

Sam Bradford who set a rookie record for completions with 335 passing Peyton Manning who had 326 in 1998 would not allow the Rams to lose on this day. Bradford was 28 of 37 passes for 292 yards and a TD, no interceptions and a passer rating of 107. Bradford engineered a nice second half comeback completing 16 of 20 passes for 168 yards and a touchdown. The Rams got a FG to go up 15-14 early in the 3rd quarter to go up 15-14 and they would never look back. Denario Alexander was again the star in the 4th quarter. On a 4 play drive of 71 yards Alexander caught 3 straight from Bradford including a bomb to put the Rams at the 49ers 3 yards line. On the next play Bradford threw a nice roll out pass to Laurent Robinson for a TD to put the Rams up 22-14. The Rams defense finished off the 49ers for a huge 25-17 victory setting up the brawl for it all next week in Seattle.

Steve Spagnuolo WTF

I have not been this disappointed in the St. Louis Rams, their coaching, their fans, or their overall play in a long time. The St. Louis Rams 27-13 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs today was an embarrassment in many ways. Over the last few years the losses and play almost became expected but that should have not been the case today. I was deeply embarrassed by this game today, and hopefully the Rams players feel that way as well.

Memo to Steve Spagnuolo, Chiefs QB Matt Cassel had a appendectomy 11 days ago. It is beyond my comprehension that the Rams could not knock Cassel out of this game. How do you not stack the box early and blitz Cassel and pound him to the ground. This is football you know you have to take advantage of that and knock him out. The Rams for most of the game failed to even lay a hand on Cassel, a complete joke!

Lets move on to the crowd or lack there of. The Edward Jones Dome was sold out for the seventh straight time this year, however for the seventh straight time the fans are not at the game. There was an official crowd of 55,669 today, 11,000+ less than capacity. The St. Louis Rams entered the game in first place in the NFC West yet over half of the seats were full of Kansas City Chiefs fans. Lets just say it this is a baseball town and the core of the true football fans is very very small.

Now more on the coaching or lack there of. The St. Louis Rams had the worst looking offense in the history of football under Scott Linehan and it appears of late that Linehan is calling the plays. The Rams who entered the game 24th in total yards could only manage 224 yards today against the Chiefs. Sam Bradford is either not allowed to throw the ball more than 5 yards down field or he is now afraid of making a mistake. Bradford had his third straight bad outing going 21 of 43 for 181 yards with 2 interceptions. Bradford has now went three straight games without a TD pass. In addition we all can see that Laurent Robinson can not catch yet he plays in more offensive sets than any other receiver. Mardy Gilyard was such a steal at the top of the 4th round that after eight months we still can not get him on the field!

The players, what can we say about the players. For the better part of the season it seemed they were playing above their ability but today all of the old issues were back. While Chiefs fans were apparently making too much noise for the Rams to hear they wasted a time out and false started 5 times! A costly false start from the Chiefs 9 yard line on 3rd and 1 cost the Rams a great chance at going up 7-0 early on their first drive. The defense that knew the Chiefs would run the ball with 4 minutes to play and the score 20-13 allowed Jamaal Charles to go 80 yards on first and ten on a simple cut back run, Game Over.

Like coaches we need to have a 24 hour cooling off period to get a better perspective, but for now we should all be pissed off. The Seahawks are going to lose to Atlanta so it is almost just like we did not even play this week. So now it is time for the Rams, their coaches, fans, and players to get ready for the San Francisco 49ers next week.

Chiefs vs. Saints Game Preview

The St. Louis Rams will take on the Kansas City Chiefs in a pivotal game for both teams down at the Edward Jones Dome on Sunday. Both teams are currently in first place in their divisions, however it appears that both teams may need to win their final three games to make the playoffs. Props to both teams for their amazing 2010 season to date. The Rams and Chiefs were a combined 5-27 in 2009 before their remarkable turnarounds in 2010.

The big question in this one is will the Chiefs QB Matt Cassel be able to play just 11 days after having an appendectomy. No NFL quarterback has ever done that but reports seem to indicate that Cassel will be active for the game. Cassel could be the difference maker. The Chiefs backup quarterback is Brodie Croyle who is 0 -10 lifetime as a starter and looked awful last week completing 7 of 17 passes for 40 yards against the San Diego Chargers.

The Rams and Chiefs are very similar on the field. Both teams will try to control the clock and move the ball with their running game. Steven Jackson topped the 1000 yard mark for the 6th straight year last week, and seemed to be running harder than I have seen him run in a while. Steven want to make it to the playoffs bad and he will be running mad against the Chiefs 15th ranked rushing defense. The Chiefs are number 1 overall in rushing behind veteran Thomas Jones and lightning fast Jamaal Charles. The Rams will need to contain both and not let Charles rip off any long runs.

Many people have criticized the Rams receiving core however the Chiefs only have one receiver and that is Dwayne Bowe who 14 TDs on the season. The Chiefs second leading receiver is Terrance Copper who only has 17 catches for 151 yards. After Bowe the Chiefs rely on their backs and tight ends to catch the ball. Bowe who only has 1 catch over the last two weeks will be the one to keep your eye on.

The Rams are going to give the Chiefs a heavy dose of Steven Jackson, but the bottom line is they are going to need to be able to pass the ball efficiently as well. The Rams who rank 25th in points scored are going to need to be able to get into the end zone. Steven Jackson only has 4 rushing TDs for the year and Sam Bradford has went two straight games without a TD pass. Bradford must bounce back and play much better than he did last week against the New Orleans Saints, in their 31-13 loss.

Both of these teams are capable of playing solid defense but there are times when they have also been sliced up. The Rams have dropped to 15 in scoring defense as their secondary has been picked apart lately. The Chiefs are 14th in scoring defense but they allowed the Chargers to own the ball last week and score 31 points. Both of these defenses rely on their offense holding onto the ball to help them out. Look for Chris Long of the Rams and Tamba Hali of the Chiefs to apply a heavy dose of pressure to the opposing quarterbacks.

In a game against two very similar teams being played in a Stadium that may have as many Chiefs fans as Rams fans this one is a tough call. I just do not see any way that Matt Cassel can play just 11 days after his appendectomy.

Rams Get Hammered In The Big Easy 31-13

The Rams game on Sunday remains us of some nights out drinking. Early on its all good you start with a glass of wine at dinner and then maybe head over to the bar for a couple more drinks. Then things start to go well and everyone is having a good time. This is about the time when someone decides to buy a round of shots perhaps Patron. A few shots later you find yourself out in the parking lot wondering what happened. Well we have all been there before, and the Rams were there on Sunday.

With 1:37 left in the first half of play the Rams Darian Stewart recovered a fumble by Courtney Roby on the Saints 21 yard line with the Rams trailing 14-6. After being outplayed for most of the first half the Rams had a chance to get right back into the game. After a 6 yard run by Steven Jackson Sam Bradford dropped back on 2nd and 4 and threw a ball down the left sideline to Laurent Robinson who appeared open. What Bradford did not see was Malcolm Jenkins coming over from the middle of the field to pick off his softly floating pass. 96 yards later Jenkins was in the house and the Saints were up 21-6 and for all intensive purposes this game was put on ice.

The final numbers do not tell the story since the Rams played with a lot of heart in the 4th quarter and continued to put up stats. Although losing by 18 points Sam Bradford threw for 231 yards, while Drew Brees threw for 221. St. Louis Rams also outrushed the Saints 136 to 132 yards. As I stated in my game preview this game would come down to mistakes and execution.

The Rams most likely would need to win the turnover battle and needed to be better on third down conversions to have a chance to beat the Saints. While the turnover battle was tied at three the Saints by far won the battle. The interception by Jenkins most likely cost the Rams at least 3 points and gave the Saints an instant 7 points. In the 4th quarter Bradford also threw another interception from the Saints 7 yard line. As costly as those mistakes were the Rams compounded that by allowing the Saints to start 10 of 12 on 3rd down conversions while the Rams started 0-of-7. This helped allow the Saints to jump out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. For a team like the Rams that has a hard time scoring 20 points they can not afford to give up 14 points that quickly. The crushing blow was when Brees hit Colston on 3rd and 17 from the 17 when the Rams inexplicitly only rushed 3 and dropped 8 into coverage. The laser from Brees was just too hard for the Rams secondary to get there in time and the hole was dug.

After having a less than great game last week against the Arizona Cardinals Sam Bradford struggled again today with a QB rating of 56.3. With three games left to play Bradford is going to have to play much better to help the Rams win the NFC West. The Seattle Seahawks lost 40-21 to the San Francisco 49ers today so the Rams remain in first place, but don't look now the 49ers are once again only one game out. The Rams will host the 8-5 Kansas City next week in a huge game for both teams.

On a side note congratulations to Steven Jackson for going over 1000 yards rushing for the 6th straight year!

Rams vs. Saints Game Preview

The St. Louis Rams will take on the New Orleans Saints today with an opportunity to make a big statement. The Rams are one of the biggest surprises this year at 6-6 and in first place in the NFC West. The Rams have played very consistent football but they are still being questioned as a playoff contender. Can the St. Louis Rams beat a team like the New Orleans Saints? It really is not the Rams fault but they do not have any wins against teams that currently have a winning record. The Rams signature win was a 20-17 stunner over the San Diego Chargers. However the Chargers now have 6 losses and were beat down by the Oakland Raiders last week.

I give Steve Spagnuolo props for keeping the Rams in every game. I still am not quite sure how the Rams are doing this with the lack of depth that they had heading into the season. The amount of confidence Sam Bradford has given this team is amazing. Bradford is playing very well right now. Over the past 7 games Bradford has 11 TD passes and only 2 interceptions. The Rams have taken very good care of the ball and controlled the clock during most of their games which is helping the defense out as well.

The Saints enter this game as hot and healthy as they have been all year. The Saints are virtually injury free. The Saints are coming into this game on a 5 game winning streak and have a 9-3 record overall and are in hot pursuit of the NFC South leading Atlanta Falcons. The Saints have averaged over 30 points during their winning streak and will pose big problems with the Rams depleted secondary. With Ron Bartell, Justin King, Oshiomogho Atogwe, Craig Dahl & Jerome Murphy all banged up look for Brees and the Saints to attack the Rams through the air. Drew Brees who was near flawless last season has thrown 16 interceptions already this year and has thrown at least one pic in eight straight Games.

On defense the Saints sum is better than their individual parts. Both Dallas and Cincinnati moved up and down the field the last couple of weeks against the Saints. The Saints thrive on turnovers and control the play. The loud crowd in the Superdome will look to disrupt the Rams and Sam Bradford. Watch for tackling machine Jonathan Vilma to keep an eye out for Steven Jackson.

The St. Louis Rams will look to stay the course on offense against the Saints. The Rams will look to control the ball with Steven Jackson and convert 3rd downs with the safe passing of Sam Bradford. The Rams beat the Saints in 2007 and last year almost beat them at the Edward Jones Dome so I do not believe the Rams will be intimidated by the World Champions. To beat the Saints you will have to score and I believe that is the biggest issue for the Rams against the Saints. The Rams are 25th in scoring and have only scored over 20 points twice this year.

This game will come down to converting on 3rd down and controlling the ball and clock. The Rams will need to pound Steven Jackson early and often into the Saints defense. Sam Bradford will need to complete some timely passes and put some points up on the board by making plays not just the safe ones. On defense the Chris Long and the Rams defense will need to get after Drew Brees and pressure him all day long. The Rams must force turnovers to stay in this one.

Overall the St. Louis Rams just do not have the horses to knock out the champs. The injuries to the Rams secondary are really going to hurt them in this one. The Saints are winning but at times winning ugly. The Saints have 5 wins of 5 points or less. The Rams are familiar with the Saints and play well against them and I expect more of the same today. If the Rams can get a couple extra turnovers we may be in for a surprise.
